15 Months Old

With our late summer trips keeping us busy, it’s been a few months since we’ve updated you on Evan’s development.  Now that we are mostly caught up on picture posts, here’s the scoop….sorry in advance for the overload.

Let’s Eat!
Evan has tried a variety of new foods since his 1st birthday, including turkey meatballs,  banana pancakes, pumpkin pancakes, pasta dishes, homemade graham crackers, beans, gnocchi, oatmeal banana cookies, baked chicken nuggets, sunbutter, grilled cheese, veggie soup, cheese quesadillas, salmon, strawberries, and more. He is becoming quite picky and often won’t eat the special dishes that Mommy makes for him. His favorite foods right now are blueberries, pasta with parmesan, sunbutter on whole wheat pita or tortilla, sweet potato, and the oatmeal cookies. He also really likes Earth’s Best Organic Elmo crackers and Crunchin’ Grahams, as well as Barbara’s Hole ‘n Oats cereal, Annie’s Whole Wheat Bunny Crackers, and Kashi or Trader Joe’s Cereal Bars.  He often wants these things instead of Mommy’s homemade foods.  For a while he really liked Mommy’s pancakes, but he must be getting bored with them.  On 2 occasions, he became fairly ill and vomited several times after having flax, which Mommy used to add to his waffles and pancakes, so we are not giving him flax anymore. As a special treat, he has tried frozen yogurt from Yogurtland, which Mommy gets at least twice a week. His favorite flavor is blueberry tart.

We have offered him organic whole cow’s milk on several occasions, but he never takes more than a sip or two, before throwing the sippy cup on the floor. We even tried blending it with strawberries and bluberries, with no luck.  We also tried hemp milk, which is suposed to be a good source of Omega-3s, protein, and calcium.  He didn’t like that either. Thus, he is still nursing 2-3 times during the day, and 1-2 times at night. While Mommy would be relieved to not feel so in demand, she is more than happy to nurse him until he self-weans, since after all, it is the best and most natural nutrition for him.  He drinks water daily from a sippy or straw cup, lately he prefers the straw cups.

Move it!
As you have seen from the videos, Evan started walking on our road trip in late August. He now has complete mobile freedom and he walks all over the place. More recently, he has started to pick up the pace, but is not quite running yet.  He has pretty good balance, and can squat and stand up with ease. With his mobile freedom, he has also decided that he likes to climb. He can get on the couch, the bed (using Tink’s stairs), and the futon by himself and does so frequently. He also tries to climb the bookshelf in the living room. Evan loves to go outside and walk around, which we try to do for a bit everyday as the weather permits.

Entertain Me!
Evan’s favorite toys are balls (especially Tink’s), books, flash-cards and his snail pull-toy. He likes to throw the ball for Tink, or bounce it across the room and go after it himself.  He often pull all of his books off of his shelf and hands them to Mommy or Daddy one at a time to read.  He especially likes to sit in Mommy or Daddy’s lap with his ‘Big Animal Book’, point to the animals and have Mommy or Daddy tell him the names.  He also does this with flash cards. He’ll hand one of us the stack of cards, we’ll show him a card at a time, tell him what’s on it, and hand it to him.  He will then toss the card to the side, keeping one or two that he wants to hold on to, which is most often the dog, ladybug, apple, or snake.

Another favorite game is to get in and out of a diaper box.  It’s really cute, he’ll grab one of our hand’s, then the other, so that we can assist him into the box.  We’ll push the box across the floor, then he’ll reach for our hands to assist him out of the box…only to want right back in the box 2 seconds later. I think his favorite part is getting in and out of the box. Once he tried this with a much too small Costco-sized granola bar box….it was too cute!  With Mommy’s assistance, he stepped into the box with both feet, but realized it was too small when he went to sit down.

His absolute favorite toy right now is the snail toy that Bing and Hidi sent him. He pulls it from the kitchen to the living room and back, over, and over, and over again.  He also really enjoys open and closing doors.

Teach Me!
It’s crazy to think that Evan has become very teachable. He now consistently signs ‘milk’ and ‘more’. He also communicates his wants by pointing, and will often want to be picked up and then point to where he wants to go…which is often towards a cracker box, a light switch, or outside.

He has learned to show us his head, chest, ears, nose and mouth, and is rapidly learning other body parts. He will often pat his head during dinner time, and then cycle through the body parts he knows.

Sleepy Time
Evan has yet to sleep though the night.  He regressed a bit after our trip to Denver and catching a bad cold, but is slowly doing better. Instead of waking before midnight, he will now sleep usually from 8:00pm-3:00am, sometimes 5:00am if we’re lucky, before waking to nurse.

He’s been quite a stinker for naps, maybe because he is transitioning from 2 to 1 per day.  Some days he will nap 1 hour around 10:30am and then 1-2 hours around 3:30pm, but most days he refuses one or the other. Mommy frequently ends up nursing him and laying down with him to get him to or to keep him asleep.

Time to Talk
Evan sure talks a lot, but he has his own language. We try everyday to get him to repeat words like ball, dog, hi, bye and more, with no luck. He does say ‘mama’ and ‘dada’ and seems to know who is who.  I’m sure he’ll say words in his own time.

New Gear
Just before our road trip, we purchased a few items to make life easier. We upgraded Evan to a rear-facing, but convertible car seat, the Britax Marathon 70. In this seat, we can rear-face Evan (which is much safer) until he’s 40 pounds and harness forward-facing until he’s 70 pounds, as long as he doesn’t reach the height limits. It’s a very cute seat, in cow-print, and Evan seems to be very comfortable in it.

We also got a more compact umbrella stroller, which has been very convenient for our trips and everyday errands.

Show me the Love
One of our favorite things about Evan at this age is how affectionate he is. Whenever we give him kisses, he places both of his little hands on our cheeks or around our neck and puts his open mouth on your cheek or lips to return the kiss. Sometimes he wakes Mommy up in the morning in this fashion.  He also loves to hug and cuddle, especially when he first wakes up.  He giggles endlessly when you plant kisses all over his face and neck in a kiss attack, it is very sweet.

Thank you so much, Becky, for the update! Next best thing to being there! :-) Love that you guys share the sweetness! — It was one of my favorite things to have those two punkins, Erik and Kristina, come cuddle with me in the mornings when I was with them. Nothing like it! Talk about little monkeys jumping on the bed! Much love, Ree
