11 Months Old

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Evan turned 11 months over the weekend and we went to the beach to celebrate! He had so much fun running around in the sand.  Daddy kept dipping his toes in the water, and then lifting him in the air when a wave crashed.  He would then pull Daddy back towards the water for another turn.  He entertained everybody in the near vicinity with his cuteness.  He also tried to eat a shell, which must have looked like one of his puffs.

Here’s an update on his development:

Evan has mastered his pincher grasp within the last week or so and will feed himself if it’s something that he really enjoys, such as puffs (like cheerios), yogurt melts or cheese.  He will also sometimes feed himself small pieces of fruit.  We’ve introduced cherries, greek yogurt, turkey, pasta, white potatoes, regular oatmeal, zucchini, nectarine, pumpkin and millet into his diet, as well as a few things to make foods tastier: basil, rosemary, and cinnamon. Since he doesn’t seem to want to drink anything from a sippy cup or bottle and doesn’t eat much solid food, he continues to nurse about every 3 hours.  He has 4 teeth now, the second top tooth has just started to come in.

Within the last month, he has gained quite a bit of strength.  He chooses not to crawl, but continues to ‘army crawl’ all over the place, and gets up on his knees all the time.  He then lifts his arm to say…”ok, ready to walk, come help!”  He also pulls up on the couch, the bed, the ottoman, his crib and his toy box, and cruises while holding on.  He can walk with just one hand from Mom or Dad, and a few times has taken a couple of steps between Mommy and Daddy.

His favorite toys are his eggs, blocks, balls, and books.  He really likes toys that open and close, or that he can put things into and then take them back out again, like his birdies and birdhouse.  He also really enjoys opening and closing doors, turning light switches off and on, and pulling the magnets off the refrigerator.

Since he has learned to consistently pull up in his crib, nap time has become a nightmare. He pulls himself to a standing position and then cries and cries until someone comes in.  Mommy usually has to take him on a walk or in the car in order to get him to nap.  We hope it’s just a phase that he’ll outgrow soon.  He was doing the same thing at bedtime for a while until recently.  He goes to sleep pretty easily at night, and usually sleeps from 8:00pm until around midnight.  And will continue to wake every few hours thereafter.  Recently, he seems to want to get up for the day at 3:00am, and it has been hard to get him to settle back down.

He’s 19lbs 13oz now, so he hasn’t gained much in the last month or so.  We are excited to celebrate his first birthday next month.

First Father’s Day

Monday, June 28th, 2010

We all had a fun first father’s day together! Daddy got to sleep in until (drum roll please…) 9:30am! Mommy and Evan had some hot home made cinnamon rolls waiting for me when I got up. mmmm…. Evan and I played and walked around for awhile and then we spent a fun filled day at the San Diego county fair. We had dinner at one of our favorite pizza places in Solana Beach and came home for some chocolate strata pie! What a great day!

San Diego Fair

Monday, June 28th, 2010

On Father’s Day, we visited the San Diego County fair for the first time. There were a TON of people there, so we skipped the carnival area and made our way to the garden, animal, and art exhibits. Mommy and Daddy really enjoyed the wonderful flowers on display in the garden area. But, Evan seemed to get a little bored with the flowers, so we made our way to the animals. Evan was fascinated by the chickens and ducks. He also enjoyed looking at the goats, pigs, cows, and sheep. Those alpaca goats have some crazy curly hair, so cool!

We then wandered to the children’s art area, where Evan enjoyed playing with a table stacked with colorful blocks. He really enjoyed knocking them all to the floor and watching Daddy pick them up. Just outside the children’s art tent was a very cool children’s play area, which included an Evan-sized straw maze, and farm-tool musical instruments. Evan had a BLAST with both. This was by far his favorite area of the fair.  There is a video here.

When it came time to eat, Daddy was a bit adventurous and tried a deep-fried Snickers bar….ick! He was also tempted by the chocolate-covered bacon, but after the Snickers, he decided it wouldn’t be the best idea…thank goodness! Mommy managed to find the one non-fried food item at the fair, a grilled chicken sandwich. Daddy also ate some deep-fried zucchini strings. Overall we had a good time at the fair and a nice Father’s Day.

Aunt Kristina’s Graduation

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

We traveled to Santa Barbara last weekend to celebrate Aunt Kristina’s graduation from UCSB! We had a big gang to cheer her on. The family rented a house in downtown Santa Barbara which Evan really enjoyed. It was a great new place to stomp around, open doors and cabinets and play outside. We drove up on Friday evening, arriving about 11:30pm.  Evan said hello to everyone who was still awake and then when they went to sleep, he was totally wired! :o) After a good 25 minutes of Daddy singing, he settled down around 1:30am. He woke up at 6am to stomp around and jump on Grandma & Grandpa, turn on the light, turn off the light, open the door, close the door… (hey they waved him in their room!).

It was great hanging out at the house and having so many people for Evan to play and walk around with. We had a very nice dinner with everyone on the water and Evan did great eating his pouches, puffs and cheese. We all cheered Kristina on at graduation, which was right on the water, nice and cool, and relatively short for a large university graduation. Congratulations Aunt Kristina!  (all of that AND Daddy learned how to juggle too) What a great weekend!

The Zoo

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

We went to the Zoo for the second time two weeks ago.  We spent a lot of time at the lizards, the humming birds, and the gorillas and bonabos.  We also discovered new animals at the Children’s Zoo. We took Evan into the petting zoo for the first time.  He was a bit timid around the goats at first (and would only pet them with his foot), but he eventually caught on.

Standing in the Crib

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Evan figured out how to pull himself up on his crib today even if he’s set down laying. This made naps and bedtime extra fun. Every time we put him down he popped right up. :o) We dropped the crib to its lowest level, but he can still pull himself up.
